英語のニュースで「amid」という単語をよく見ます。
amidとはどういう意味なのでしょうか。
1.「（出来事）～の真っ最中に、～の真っただ中に、～の渦中に」
一つ目の意味は「～の真っ最中に、～の真っただ中に、～の渦中に」です。
周りで騒々しい、ごった返す、混乱する出来事が起きていて、その中に現在いることを意味します。ニュースなどの文章でよく使用されます

2.「～に囲まれている」
２つ目の意味は「（物事）～の真ん中に、～に囲まれている」です。

she sat amid the trees.
彼女は木の（真ん）中に座った。
amongとの違い
次に、「among」とはどう違うのでしょうか。以下の文章が参考になりました。
Amid is more formal than among. Also, amid is used for place, while among can be used for place and abstract ideas of groups. “I saw her amid the crowd.” “I saw her among the crowd.” “Among the students, she is the most intelligent.” But NOT “Amid the students, she is the most intelligent.” Also, to me “amidst” sounds better than “amid.” They are alternate versions of the same word but “amidst” has a more natural feeling to me.
ネイティブの人の意見では、amidはより「形式的」な言い方なようです。
また、amidは「特定の集団」には用いないようです。たとえば「amid students」という用い方はしないようです。この場合はamongを用い「among students」とするようです。
また、ほぼ同じ意味の「amidst」のほうがより自然に感じられるそうです。
